Meta recommends 125 characters for primary text, 40 for the headline and 30 for the description - longer copy runs, but Feed folds it behind "... See more". Type below to count live and watch exactly what stays above the fold. Free, no signup, runs in your browser.
Meta's recommendations at a glance
Recommended lengths keep the whole message visible; text beyond them still runs, truncated.
| Field | Recommended | What happens beyond it |
|---|---|---|
| Primary text | 125 characters | Feed folds the rest behind "... See more" |
| Headline | 40 characters (27 on Facebook Feed) | May be cut off on smaller placements |
| Description | 30 characters | Often hidden entirely on some placements |

Every Meta character limit, field by field
One number per field, and the placement where it bites hardest.
Meta primary text character limit
125 characters. Past that, Feed folds the rest behind "... See more". Carousel is far tighter at 80.
Meta headline character limit
40 characters on most placements, 27 on Facebook Feed. Write to the shorter number and the headline survives everywhere.
Meta description character limit
30 characters. Several placements drop the field entirely, and carousel allows only 18.
Meta link description character limit
The same 30-character field. Ads Manager labels it "description"; "link description" is the older name from link ads, where it sits under the headline.

Character limits, answered
How many characters can a Facebook ad have?
Meta recommends 125 characters for primary text, 40 for the headline and 30 for the description. Longer text is allowed and still runs - Feed simply truncates primary text behind "... See more", so the first 125 characters carry the message.
Where exactly does "See more" cut my text?
Meta publishes no exact threshold - the fold moves with device and placement. This preview approximates the common Feed fold at around 125 characters, which is why that is also the recommended length.
Do emojis count as characters?
Yes - an emoji counts at least as one character (some count as two or more internally). This counter counts them the way browsers do, which is close to what you will see in Ads Manager.
Can I get copy that fits the limits automatically?
Yes - every ad Adhook generates ships with primary text, headline, description and CTA already written within Meta's limits, front-loaded so the message survives the fold. Try it with 10 free credits, no card.
